Frank Addario Comments on Proposed Bail Changes in the Toronto Star
Prime Minister Carney announced that "tough" criminal justice legislation will be introduced. Frank Addario comments that there is no evidence of a need for "tough-on-crime" changes.

Frank Addario commented in the Toronto Star on proposed new criminal justice legislation previewed by Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney said that the legislation will expand reverse-onus bail and allow consecutive sentences for certain offences. Frank noted that this kind of legislation is mainly about politicians engaging in rhetorical posturing rather than evidence-based policy making. "We go through this cycle with Liberal governments... on a routine basis. Whenever they feel threatened by the Conservative leadership and that flank, they respond with tough-on-crime rhetoric, which invariably blames judges or laws being incorrectly interpreted. There's no real evidence that that's correct. Crime rates seem to be oblivious in Canada and elsewhere in the world to the severity of laws or alternative options that are available to judges."
